Principal Engineer - Data & Platforms (m/f/d)

Berlin HQ
Full-time
Permanent employee

Your Role & How we work

As Senior Engineer - Data & Platforms (m/f/d), you build and operate the data platform, cloud infrastructure, internal tooling, and engineering practices that power our equity research and the AI products built on them, at petabyte scale. Our stack is Python, SQL, AWS, and Databricks.

You report to Carlos Bielsa, Chief AI Officer & Managing Partner. This is a strong IC role — most of your time goes to designing, building, and shipping. The team is small, senior, and expanding, so you pick up significant ownership early and grow it as the team grows. You work closely with Quantitative Research, AI Engineering, Product & Data, and the investment team, and we treat agentic AI as a default in how we build.
  • Design, build, and operate large-scale data pipelines, ETLs, APIs, and integrations that handle complex datasets and high-volume traffic reliably.
  • Build and improve internal research tooling, including the web frontends the investment team uses, and evolve our data platform (lakehouse, orchestration, processing) and the primitives the team builds on.
  • Build the data and infrastructure foundations that LLM-enabled workflows and AI agents depend on.
  • Strengthen operational excellence: observability, monitoring, incident response, data quality, and secure data handling.
  • Raise the engineering bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentoring, and use agentic AI across all engineering functions (coding, review, testing, debugging, monitoring, security audits, documentation) to push the team's practices forward.

The experience you bring

  • Several years of relevant industry experience building and operating production-grade data or platform systems, paired with an outstanding academic record and clear evidence of exceptional analytical and systems-thinking ability.
  • Strong Python and SQL with clean engineering practices: PostgreSQL, lakehouse formats (Parquet, Iceberg, Delta), distributed processing, production APIs (FastAPI, Django REST Framework, Flask), and a major public cloud (AWS strongly preferred).
  • Solid grasp of data modeling, pipeline design, schema evolution, backfills, and failure modes in large-scale systems, with strong production discipline across testing, observability, data quality, and security.
  • Hands-on use of AI across all engineering functions, including frontier coding systems like Claude Code and Codex, as a core part of how you work.
  • Nice to have: asset management or capital-markets systems supporting investment decisions; Databricks/Spark, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, containers; modern web frontends for internal tools; LLM systems in production (RAG, MCPs, evaluation, LLMOps, agentic orchestration).

2 reasons why you should not apply

  • You want a finished, stable platform to maintain. We are still building the foundations, and you will be designing and shipping the primitives the rest of the team relies on, not operating someone else's.
  • You treat AI tooling as an occasional helper. We expect agentic AI to be a default in how you build, review, test, and ship, every day, not now and then.

Your mindset

  • You are a builder who loves to ship: strong on design, careful on quality, pragmatic on tradeoffs. You move fast, but fast does not mean sloppy.
  • You care deeply about correctness, reliability, security, and long-term maintainability.
  • You see AI-powered development as a competitive advantage, not a novelty, and use agentic AI as a core part of how you work.
  • You communicate clearly on progress, tradeoffs, and risk, own problems end-to-end, and are entrepreneurial and committed to BIT Capital's long-term success.

What we offer

  • Work with petabytes of data and the most cutting-edge tools in and beyond asset management, with Day 1 ownership of challenging, varied work and a steep learning curve.
  • Become part of a unique success story in European asset management, alongside the most knowledgeable experts in the industry on one of the most consequential investment themes of the next decade.
  • A motivated, highly international team (15 nationalities) that gathers in person at our Berlin HQ and supports each other, with flat hierarchies and direct interaction with our management team and investors.
  • Visa sponsorship, relocation support, and a competitive compensation package with a meaningful variable component tied to fund performance.
